Michael Sam Went from 14 to 50,000+ Twitter Followers in a Day
To all the people who hopped out of time machines from the future yesterday to bravely ask “Who cares about a football player’s sexual orientation?” take a look at these numbers. The NFL Draft prospect, who came out as gay last night, joined Twitter Saturday in anticipation of the announcement. He picked up 14 followers that day. On Sunday, the day of his announcement, 31,150 users followed Sam in just the span of a few hours, according to data provided by Twitter.

His account how has 50,800+, with thousands more following every hour. His first tweet (above) is rapidly approaching 20,000 FAVs.
In a better world, this wouldn’t be a story. But contrary to the grousing of those people living in a magical post-discrimination world, who can’t be bothered to have SportsCenter interrupted, a lot of folks want to follow Sam’s story — and should. For if anyone should have a well-heard voice in what will surely be one of the biggest sports stories of the year, it’s Sam himself.
