Babe Ruth: A Photo Tribute

Babe Ruth was born on this day in 1895. Despite playing well before television, the internet or Twitter, Ruth remains one of the most popular athletes of all time (he even has 4,000 Twitter followers). In fact, the baseball he famously signed before hitting three home runs for a sick child went up for auction today and bidding is already past the $50,000 mark. In honor of Ruth, I collected some of his most memorable photos into the gallery above.

WAG Update

Michigan’s Nik Stauskas is dating Tay Anderson, who shot past Lindsey Duke as the best-looking NCAA girlfriend (in my opinion). CelebSlam, meanwhile, has a huge gallery of Anne V in a bikini. The nine-time SI Swimsuit model is single after breaking up with Mets pitcher Matt Harvey.

Porn vs Power Ranger

It’s been two weeks since C.M. Punk left the WWE and he already has a couple intriguing career options. Jason David Frank, the original Green Ranger on the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, has challenged Punk to a MMA fight. Punk has yet to respond. Perhaps he’s contemplating whether to take up Brazzers.com on their offer to make a porn, which would be scored by Minor Threat.

Rebecca Gayheart came onto my radar in middle school as The Noxema Girl and never really left. She is today’s Throwback LLOD.

Big Brother Is Watching

In this case, “Big Brother” equates to Russian officials and the watching is taking place in the shower.

Ten Years Ago

Ten years ago this week, the free-spending Angels were the talk of baseball, as SI’s Phil Taylor writes:

First, [Artie] Moreno, 57, authorized the signings of two front-of-the-rotation free-agent starters — righthanders Bartolo Colon (four years, $51 million) and Kelvim Escobar (three years, $18.75 million) — and then green-lighted the signing of a big bat, out-fielder Jose Guillen (two years, $6 million). But that was all a warm-up to his headline move — the Jan. 12 signing of free-agent outfielder Vladimir Guerrero for $70 million over five years. (Two days later the Angels added third baseman Shane Halter for one year at $575,000.) “I wouldn’t put us in the Yankees’ category,” closer Troy Percival says of the spending spree. “But you know that other owners and G.M.’s must be looking at what we’ve done and are saying, ‘Whoa, a high roller just sat down at the table.’ “

Guerrero would go on to win the MVP that season but the Angels were swept by the Red Sox in the ALDS. They’d advance to the ALCS the next season but are still looking for their first World Series since 2002.

Is the only reason most guys come to this page is for the LLOD? Thats all the comments I ever see. To actually get mad over a choice that is made 5 times a week? Funny

Get over it guys it was an accident.  Incidentally it happened because other cars had stopped for him to 'let him cross' and she didn't see it and went around them.  Why you would stop on a 4 lane road to let a child cross (when you have no control over the other cars) is beyond me.

Rebecca Gayheart? Shame on you. I'm sure the Cruz family isn't happy with your choice.

"On June 13, 2001, Gayheart was driving a vehicle which struck nine-year-old Jorge Cruz, Jr. as he walked across a street in Los Angeles. He died the following day from his injuries. On November 27, 2001, Gayheart pleaded no contest to vehicular manslaughter. She was sentenced to three years of probation, a one-year suspension of her license, a $2,800 fine and 750 hours of community service."

She killed a kid out of sheer negligence and did NO jail time.

Is this the first LLOD to have committed vehicular manslaughter?

@MadDoser  Yep.  She was in the center divider when she killed the kid. Here is a more detailed story:

In the summer of 2001, actress Gayheart struck and subsequently killed a nine-year-old boy named Jorge Cruz Jr. as the latter was walking home from school. According to police reports, Cruz had crossed the street about 150 to 175 feet from the nearest crosswalk. While several cars stopped to let him pass, Gayheart reportedly swerved around them and turned directly into a two-way left-turn lane. In her impatience, Gayheart struck the Cruz boy with her car. Suffering from critical internal injuries, young Cruz died the next day at Los Angeles Children's Hospital. The boy's parents subsequently filed a wrongful death suit against Gayheart. In restitution, Gayheart agreed to pay for Cruz's hospital and funeral expenses and pleaded no contest to vehicular manslaughter on Nov. 27, 2001. The actress was sentenced to three years probation, a one-year suspension of her license, a $2,800 fine, and 750 hours of community service. Represented by high-profile Hollywood lawyer Harland Braun (who also defended actor Robert Blake), Gayheart's sweetheart deal was viewed by many critics as merely a slap on the wrist. To make matters worse, on the heels of this embarrassing mea culpa, Gayheart returned to the headlines later that year following yet another unfortunate auto accident in which she flipped her rental car into two parked vehicles. Luckily, no one was injured or killed this time and no charges were filed.

@MadDoser I agree you shouldn't make up your own traffic rules, but according to the news reports at the time, she went around them, illegally in a left turn lane.  You don't just blow around stopped cars and assume they're stopped for for no reason because you might just kill someone...and she did.  Shame on SI for picking her as the LLOD.
