The Cubs Revealed Their New Mascot and It’s as Bad as You Think

News, Sign Of The Apocalypse

Bd5Dmx6CYAAwMZG.jpg_large

Why?

Just… why?

First things first, this is not a joke. It’s a real thing.

The Cubs have unveiled their first mascot in modern history, and by most objective standards, it’s awful.

According to the team’s official website:

The new mascot was created as a response to survey feedback and fan interviews, the team said in a statement. People wanted more Cubs-related family-friendly entertainment at Wrigley Field, and Clark will interact in the community, engage with young fans, and be respectful of the game. Clark is named after Clark and Addison, the intersection where Wrigley Field is located.

Reactions to the reveal were predictable, if not amusing:

And if these fans didn’t care for the hokey, cereal-box worthy mascot to begin with, I’m guessing they really won’t like his first official tweet, which, in an odd way, was perfect:

If the “century of losing” thing wasn’t enough to turn away Cubs fans, we’re guessing this won’t be the last straw for most of them. But it’s quite unfortunate that the franchise had the poor judgment to give the internet even more ammunition on a team that is historically the lowest hanging fruit in all of sports.

Aren't all professional mascots a little scary and really smelly? C'mon. All mascot are for little kids and worthy of fun. In fact the White Sox have had a few. Does anyone remember Ribbie and Roobarb? Waldo the Wolf? And lastly, Southpaw? Pluhleeze.

Isn't this the little kid (Kid Cloudkicker) from the Disney cartoon Talespin?

What's so bad about it?? It's a Mascot for the Cubs. Did you want a super-hero or the freaking Rock??

Did anyone else immediately think of Clark W. Griswold?  Seems extra fitting....

This is a children's cartoon right? This is another example of the cubs acting like a minor league team.

Makes them look like some Double-A team. What inning will they have the dizzy bat races?

Looks like something that would come from a corporate-created Saturday morning cartoon designed to be as bland and inoffensive as possible. Bland and inoffensive is not the Chicago spirit. They should have made him a little blue-faced badass based on the cub used in the logo from 1979-93.

Along with the backwards-worn ball cap, why not give him dreadlocks and long baggy pants too.

This isn't going on the helmets.  This is just going to be some teenage kid dressed up walking around the stadium and taking pictures with kids... maybe do a few commercials.  Why anyone is thinking this is a big deal is beyond me.

I could see the actual mascot costume looking a little better than the cartoon representation of Clark. I find the weird thing about the cartoon design is it does feel decidedly 80s/90s and not in line with current character design.

dan treadway thinks he speaks for lots of people, but only because this site is becoming as obnoxious as huffington post.

I like the mascot. In fact, I'm quite pleasantly surprised.

Absolutely pathetic.

Once again, Cubs management is pandering to the six-year-olds and the "loveable loser" attitude. As long as we keep TRYING, right? Bull.

Who designed that--Disney?

If the Cubs were ever serious about turning the team around, they'd try to turn them into emotionless killers, like all the champion Yankee teams and even the Red Sox now. Win or go someplace else. They have NONE of the sentimentality the Cubs have.

Would the Yankees or Red Sox use a mascot like that? Would they play a loser song like "Go, Cubs, Go!" (another thing pandering to six-year-olds) after a game? Would they use something like the weak "walking bear" logo?

No effing way.

What do they have to show for it? A combined eight championships in the last twenty years.

Would swear a bunch of people got their smart phones/iPads and Twitter accounts taken away, given the anger over this on the internet. What a sad country that a benign, friendly logo created for kids creates such miserable people. Get a life folks, and more importantly, get off your computers and actually do something.

Went through this with "Wally the Green Monster". Thought it was ridiculous and embarrassing but to my great surprise he has been popular. It's all about the kids so don't worry Cubs fans he will disappear into a lifetime of entertaining kids and attending events like little league parades.

And they couldn't even get his hat on straight?  Typical Cubs.

Haters go away. Just showed it to some young kids, and they liked Clark! (The kids are, after all, the demo that Clark is geared towards) not you cynical geezers. No he won't win games, and no the Cubbies won't be any better this year, or for a while. At worst Clark is innocuous, lame or silly, but so what? I mean, really, so what?

Scouring the comment line & twitter for "objectiv(ity)," Dan?  "Maybe, no (Furio)."  That's like going to A-Rod for an "objective" view on the state of baseball.

As for the depiction, I've seen better (Sparky Sun Devil (replaced by a fork (Nike)), I've seen worse (anything "The Simpsons").

And the Cubs' claim, "People wanted...," that reads like straight oughta' the Nike handbook.

Shouldn't there be a 1908 on there somewhere? You know, for the last time they won the World Series. Or maybe 'Bartman' on the bat?

I was going to crack a joke that some uptight old men will complain about the backwards hat. Apparently it wasn't a joke and a couple already have.

Just contract this franchise already.

No, no, no. This is some elaborate prank. Mark Cuban bought the team undercover and he's having it over  us. There is no way this is the mascot of an MLB team. Or, maybe, A-Rod hacked the site and posted this because he's so mad at everybody. Or we are all dreaming, like in Matrix. This cannot be real. No, no, no.

Marchoir

The most offensive part of the logo is the backwards cap. What's that about? Is the mascot also going to wear unlaced Timberlands and oversize pants that hang at the knees, and sport gold grilles This is MLB, not a rap video.

Who cares at least the cubs are trying to do something different. Kids will like it, it will sell merchandise, whatever it is not going to impact your life. If you don't like it, then don't look at it.

The Cubs continue to defy logic or description. It's so bad that in realty, it's perfect.

maybe one of the dumbest looking mascots in the history of pro sports---who did they pay to create this thing and how much???? hello???

@modsuperstar Nothing wrong with that. The computer-generated logos of today are as bland and soulless as can be, the cartoon is an improvement on that.

@amolad "Would the Yankees or Red Sox use a mascot like that?"

Apparently you have not seen the Red Sox fuzzy green monster.

donald5

@amolad Really?  You think the marketing department getting some kid friendly mascot to stroll through the stadium has even the slightest bearing on the performance on the field?  This is going to have an effect on the starting rotation and how many wins they can get out of them?  What cheer they use.  Alabama uses one of the goofiest cheers, roll ride roll and they seem to do just fine.  The marketing department has very little to do with the product on the filed, pretty much like any other industry,

@Iowa Dont judge the entire country based on the reaction of some internet jerks to a cartoon bear.  Golly.

@unitcaptain11 @Iowa Sorry, but it's a sad commentary on all of us that people (and apparently a lot of them) even get this riled up about something so minor. If a generic mascot designed for kids gets people this angry, would hate to see what's going to happen when something happens that actually should be an outrage. Or maybe that's the problem, when something truly outrageous does happen, no one will care.
