A Top Recruit Didn’t Pick LSU and His Mom Wasn’t Happy About It (Sound Familiar?)

No, you’re not having deja vu.

On Thursday, Gerald Willis III, a 4-star defensive tackle from New Orleans revealed his much anticipated college decision at the Under Armor All-America game in Orlando, Florida.

But the excitement surrounding Willis’ announcement was only partially related to his talent. Joining him on stage would be his mother, April Justin, who two years ago caused quite a stir at the very same event (and the entire world over) when she openly criticized another one of her sons, blue chip safety Landon Collins, for not choosing to attend LSU.

Indeed, two years after that incident occurred, history would repeat itself — likely to the delight of ESPN, which had been hyping up the announcement.

After Willis revealed that he would be taking his talents to Gainesville, Florida (side note: Can we retire the phrase “taking my talents to” sometime within the next decade?), a visibly disappointed Justin said that “it is what it is,” before following with “LSU’s still number 1.”

Gee, thanks, Mom.

Miss Justin must have a fun girl back in the day. Two sons, with two different last names, separated in age by two years. My guess would be that both fathers were athletes themselves
