“I’ve Been Telling My Wife For Years Size Doesn’t Matter”: Coach Goes On Epic Rant

Video

Southern Illinois basketball dropped yet another game Tuesday night to fall to an abysmal 2-8 on the young season. As the video above will prove, the loss to Murray State was clearly too much for SIU head coach Barry Hinson to take.

Hinson’s postgame press conference will go down as one of the best coach’s rants of all time. We fully expect it to join a SportsCenter Top 10 list soon.

Anyway, stop reading and go watch the clip. The fun part starts around the 1:15 mark. (Stay through the end.)

And just in case you need to see Hinson’s words on-screen for the full-effect, we’ve transcribed – with some help from our friends at Awful Announcing — some of the best parts below:

“I’ve been telling my wife this for years, size doesn’t matter.” … He was talking rebounds, but still

“Our guards are awful. Our three starting guards had one assist and seven turnovers. They must think it’s a tax credit. IT’S UNBELIEVABLE HOW OUR STARTING GUARDS PLAYED. “

“My wife…MY WIFE…can score more than two buckets on 11 shots because I KNOW my wife will AT LEAST SHOT FAKE one time.”

“There was a sniper in the gym. Didn’t you see that? We had guys falling down. We had a guy snipered at half-court. Two guys snipered at half-court. It was unbelievable. I would’ve thought Navy Seal Team 6 was out there.”

“I mean, you saw how we turned the ball over. We made three turnovers tonight where we just came down and threw them the ball. I swear, I thought one time that one of our players said, ‘Merry Christmas.’ I thought it was a gift. I thought they signed the package over.”

Update: Hinson has since gone on the Dan Patrick Show, in which he apologized for calling out Marcus Fillyaw by name, but otherwise stood by everything.

Say what you want but thats a passion for the game. Any player that sees this knows what hes talking about.  Yes is was very funny. He knows that they can win games and they are better than there performance of late thats why hes hyped and charged......... You dont see coaches of teams 1-30 ranting like this because the coach knows the teams sucks. He knows those boys can do better they are just not trying.

Definitely old school. Vince Lombardi used to have epic rants. He'd lose his  mind. Hank Stram was another live wire. Woody Hayes was a crazy man and it eventually did him in. I have no idea why coaches are so meek and mild nowadays. Maybe it's because of all the sensitive gay players. Or a bunch of wussies who start crying like that Dez Bryant fellow or whining like  Kobe.. Can you imagine Hinson coaching the Knicks? Now that would be funny. Carmelo would have a heart attack.

Just fire the bum as he disgraced his school.

So how many of the people calling for this guy to be fired have actually coached? No, your son's 4th grade basketball team does not count. Need a job for which you were paid.

The President of Southern Illinois and the AD along with the Trustees need to make a caoching change.  Hinton is not mentally sane to coach these young men.. Hinton has obviously cracked under the strain of losing once again. Fire Hinton and move on. It's not like it 's a top ranked program or anything.

Some times calling people out is a necessary part of tearing them down so they can be rebuilt.  Obviously, he knows a lot more about his team than we all do.  Or if he doesn't, he'll be out of job real soon.  At least he isn't kicking them and throwing basketballs at their heads like Rice did at Rutgers.  Now THAT is abuse.  I little name calling doesn't hurt anyone.

What decent player would want to play for this loser Hinton?? No one. it's over fire the bum.

Never heard of this bum before.  Just fire the bum and get some kid in there who can recruit and coach. Hiring nobodies like this bum is a waste of time.  Where the hell is S. Illinois?

Where is the leadership, love and encouragement a coach is suppose to bring to these young men ?  The coach went against the norm.  Such tirade is reserved for the locker room, and not the press.  Why call out players since this is a team sport and not boxing.  You win together and you lose together.  He is a disgrace to this great institution.  What is up with "my wife", "my wife".  Is she employed by the university?  I am not a proponent of firing people for minor mistakes, however an apology is not enough.  He should be suspended for a few.games.

NOTE TO MURRAY STATE UNIVERSITY: Do not allow a coach making of fool of himself to use your university back-drop with logo when going "bob knight" on the players.

And if a professor went on a moronic public tirade like this against students, how long would they last?  If you have no respect for the people you coach or teach, then get another job.

Hardly an "epic rant". Another sportswriter trying to create a story where there isn't one.

That's all code for , "I'm soooo fired."

It was I at OVCBall.net that had the story first. I informed Awful Announcing about it after I posted it.

@dandogwood Who is this Hinton you speak of? Also...maybe you should see how the Alumni and students of the University actually think, because all the ones I know love him for this.

@dandogwood That's part of the problem.  There's no decent players on the team.  Lowery left the team in shambles due to a god awful APR.  Hinson was brought in partly because his team previously led the MVC in APR during his tenure.  These players need to buy into the system or start flipping burgers because nobody is going to take them on a transfer.

@dandogwood Southern Illinois...just like the name says. And you know why they hired him...they graduate people...yes...we do actually care about that still.

JamesAnderson

@jdane They do that all the time...you do stupid things in class like flunk a test then they come in and dress down the class to get them to do better next time. Do you think a boss will do less than this?

@jdaneExactly what did he say that hurt your feelings so much? He didn't swear. He didn't insult women, homosexuals, Indians or any other liberal-preferred group. He called out one player individually, which he has since apologized for. If a professor had a bunch of students performing at a D level, they might go on a tirade too.

@Jed1Agreed. Apparently 'epic' is now code for anytime a coach acts honestly and doesn't just resort to coachspeak in a press conference. He used colorful (but not foul) language, but anyone who knows Barry Hinson knows that's how he talks all the time. Nothing really that out of the ordinary, other than his obvious frustration. With his team playing like it is, don't blame him.

Iowa

@dandogwoodHe is in his second year. He didn't recruit most of these players. If you haven't heard his name then you must not follow college basketball much, he's been around awhile.

@Iowa @jdane What does the comment have to do with insulting a group?  He talked about respect for people you coach or teach.  There's nothing political there, so stop trying to make it a conservative/liberal thing like everything else is these days.

I like the guy, like the fact that he's not afraid to show how pissed of he is.  He was a good coach at SW Missouri State, and his players graduate.  He wants them to be as passionate as he is about the game.  Nothing wrong about that.

dandogwood

@Iowa @jdane The coach is a moron and loser just fire the  bum and hire a younger kid who can relate to the players. This Retread Hinton has always been mediocre that's why Hinton was Dir of operations at Knasas a job for a 20 year old kid. Hinton is a fricking loser fire him and move on.

iclasticons

@Iowa @jdane jdane did not accuse him of being profane, sexist or anything like that. He or she said the tirade was moronic, and I agree. Any coach who thinks that kind of public display is motivational needs to spend time with coaches who have achieved program greatness over the long haul. I don't want to start a debate, but a guy from Duke comes to mind. There is a huge difference between public bashing and being frank and honest about poor performance. Still, you gotta give this guy major points for the humor that runs through his hissy fit. As for the professor thing, right now the professor's students would be in the Dean's office, initiating grievance proceedings. And maybe some of this guy's players are doing the same thing. I hope not, because I hope some of them are mature enough to accept any rightful responsibility and to let the coach know his performance sucked, too.

JamesAnderson

@dandogwood @Iowa Yah..never done nothing...except lead Missouri State to respectability and one of the highest graduation rates. Oh...and then he was head of basketball operations at Kansas...maybe you heard of them?
