Turkeys of the Year: The Best of the Worst from 2013

It seems like a simple bargain: In exchange for celebrity and wealth, all athletes have to do is play their game and not ethically biff on the national stage. Yet every year the siren’s call of jackassery proves too alluring to resist for dozens of the famous and fortunate. Is it frustrating for fans who invest time and money into supporting those players? Unquestionably. But it would be more frustrating if it didn’t provide an opportunity to look back and mock those same players for their foibles. And so we present: the 2013 Turkeys of the Year.

Dana White trying to promote and encourage what would surely be one of the top fights in 2014 doesn't make him a turkey, just makes him a smart business man

What Sepp Blatter said was hilarious and true.  Those who are offended are pansies.

What about SI itself for that sham of a "takedown" of Oklahoma State by that piece of refuse of a reporter Thayer Evans? Did any of that whole 5-part series not get entirely debunked?

Don't know why Te'o is here. Being a victim of a cruel hoax doesn't make you an a**hole.

You may not agree with Damon Bruce's tirade, but why does voicing an opinion that professional sports have gone to far in attracting a female audience necessarily mean he must lose his job?  These guys have hours of airtime they have to fill each day, and the need to be interesting to keep an audience.  Some of the times they are going to say things that offend people.  That happens.  If we fire every on-air personality that strays from a completely PC script, we are going to be left homogenous, bland programming that no one outside of accountants from Davenport, Iowa will have any interest in consuming.

The ship of media opinion has sailed on the Redskins name. The ship of public opinion is still very much in dock.

A couple of, to me, notable omissions:

The Miami Marlins, for being the worst organization in pro sports. Way worse than the Jaguars.

The Baseball Writers Association of America, for deciding that grandstanding for "making a point" about steroids was more important than voting in some of the many deserving Hall of Fame candidates currently on the ballot. An absolute disgrace.

Dear SI writer(s),

Your intro to this piece talks at length about the fans' disappointment with the players, the players. Yet the details of the piece talk about two commissioners, team owners, the NCAA, sportswriters, coaches wives, referees and agents as well as players. Suggestion: Instead of talking about the fans disillusionment with the "players", how about "sports figures" or even "people". You know, they discussed it in that journalism class that you slept through (well, one of them anyway).

Only the liberal bedwetters think that the Redskins should change their name.

Did anyone else do the conversion on 50 degrees celsius? That's 122 fahrenheit! ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY TWO DEGREES! FIFA is such a disgrace it makes the NCAA seem adequate.

S.I. should make this list for sucking most of 2013.  Stop it with the desperate Teblow stuff.... You're not ESPN.... You're better than that!

Nothing about the inane idea of dismissing wrestling from the Olympic Games?  The IOC should have made the list for suggesting that its oldest sport should have to compete with squash for a slot on the roster.

@JohnLammTX The BBWAA point is a great one. I added them to the gallery. Thanks for the suggestion.

@PWINGS It's unfortunate that you decided to bury a good, smart point in an unnecessarily hostile comment.

I vote for "THe Houston Honkies" and "The Cleveland Crackas"

@JimiScheid I completely agree!  The Olympics has so many silly events these days, but wrestling was actually a real ancient sport.  I was sad they eliminated it, but I suppose it's not really as though you ever got to see much of it broadcasted.

@TCUfan @BudPhyte Yeah he did while not knowing she didn't exist but overall does that make him an a**hole? I just don't get all the animosity against him.

@NeilJanowitz @PWINGSHostile? No. Critical and impatient? Yes! Athletes are held to standards of performance. When they fail to perform to a satisfactory level compared to those standards, they suffer the consequences.  Unfortunately, commissioners, team owners, the NCAA, coaches wives, referees, agents and yes, sportswriters usually don't have such standards of performances or consequences for their behavior. Theoretically, sportswriters have an education that should prepare them to perform to an acceptable standard. Obviously, some of them didn't fully utilize the benefits of that education with respect to the craft of writing or the practice of objectivity. I was merely pointing that out.   I stand by my comment as written.

@Rickapolis @a52wkhi, [sigh]... Come on, that's like saying me not liking Obama makes me racist. It's a team name, they aren't going around calling American Indians that all the time.

Let's put it this way. If calling a team "Redskins" is racist, then calling a team "Spartans" would be racist towards Southern Greeks, calling a team "Vikings" would be racist against people of Nordic descent. It's meant as a compliment, and implies that the Redskins are fierce warriors. I don't see anyone up in arms over the Braves, Indians, Chiefs, et cetera. So, give it a break.

@KingFink @Rickapolis @a52wkhi "....It's meant as a compliment, and implies that the Redskins are fierce warriors...."

Then I suggest that Snyder change the team's name to the Washington Warriors. It's a lot less offensive than Redskins.
