Peter Gammons: Alex Rodriguez Is Like the Boston Marathon Bombers

News

Pittsburgh Pirates v New York Yankees

When an anti-A-Rod comparison takes a turn for the worse. Gammons apparently made these comments on the Mike Lupica Show on ESPN NY today:

Here’s the relevant part transcribed:

Lupica: …I keep holding out hope — just for the good of the sport — that there is still a deal to be made on this suspension.

Gammons: I wonder now though… And I’ve had people on the Yankees say this to me: he just wants to blow up the world. He’s like the marathon bombers. He’s gonna get them… We all understand he didn’t test positive per se…

All in all, sounds like a poor choice of metaphor, couched in something a Yankees person told him. Gammons has since responded and apologized:

My gut tells me that virtually every member of BBWA new Arod was **juiced** when they voted him 3 MVP's.  My gut tells me that others in your profession, the sports media, know that there are a huge portion of NBA and NFL, and NCAA athletes juicing.  Nobody cares though and these guys are still glorified, if there good that is.

So while there is this hypocratic double standard.  PED's Baseball players villans.  PED NBA, NFL, NCAA athletes idolized.   I just look at Arod as a basketball player of his ilk, great compiler, bad clutch shooter, horrible pr guy.  '09 being an exception.  A ROd was a monster.

I watch AA baseball.  And some of the players are stick figures, regular size folk, and some are built.   The game looks clean, and I agree with bringing integrity back to the sport, and believe a half hearted effort is in place right now to do so.  I applaud this as it is head above shoulders better than what the WWF, NBA, NFL, etc are doing, turning a blind eye.  And encouraging bigger faster stronger and more explosive action.  What a joke this is.  Nobody in the media cares.  You gotta admit Peter this makes the media look like witchhunters going after historic MLB stat compilers.   BTW, I grew up admiring you and watched you every possible minute.

I use to be Arods biggest critic, till all the piling on, now I support Arod, and hope he gets every last penny the Yankees signed him too.  No way do I want to see the NYY get out of that contract.

**juiced**   The reason I say this is this, the best numbers to date in the history of the game at 500 games 1000 games 1500 games.   In the steroid era.  The BBWA didn't think he was juicing.  I knew he was to the tune of 99+%.  Also, I've heard the media say, during the height of the steroid era "that saved the game" while in the locker room, they could tell who was doing the stuff.   Put them all in the hall.  Steroids were promoted by owners, gms, managers, fans, media, till the game got on track, till Ruth Aaron, Mays and Mantle were threatened with unsavory company.   BTW, do you think anybody will care if Luis Alcinders all time scoring record is surpassed by a steroid freak.  I DONT.

And as far as who looks like a boston bommer.  It's MLB who purchased illegal documents, vandalized from a vehicle, to make there case.   Put money in the pocket of Steroid dealers while doing so if I'm not mistaken, and paid for the documents in cash.  That to me seems more criminal that what a athlete, no different than 50 percent of major sports athletes in regards to juice, hiring a team to fight for himself and his family.  His legacy, is shot, but if he was an NBA'r his legacy would be paved with gold.

Just My opinion.  We are entiteled to that as americans.  As it is your right to delete,

I like Peter Gammons, but that was an absurdly stupid thing to say.

Gammons is old, and sometimes old people say offensive things. Sometimes on accident sometimes on purpose. The world continues to spin

Gammon sis one of the classiest guys in the mlb industry. I dont think he'll have a problem getting players to talk to him. Considering he basically lives in Boston, he knows he made a poor metaphor. It's not like any players are going to come to arods side and back him. He's gonna be a bigger pariah than canseco.
