The Cleveland Indians Seem to Be Quietly Ditching Their Controversial Chief Wahoo Logo

Gear, Style Watch

Boston Red Sox v Cleveland Indians

According to some ace detective work by Chris Creamer at SportsLogos.net, the demise of the Cleveland Indians offensive “Chief Wahoo” logo seems imminent. Creamer points out the rise of the simple red “C” on hats and helmets, combined with the disappearance of the chief from several official MLB web pages, as the damning evidence.

With all the negative publicity Dan Snyder garners for his obstinate stance on the Redskins name, maybe the Indians are being very smart with this subtle move. Although, exactly because of people like Snyder, maybe the Indians are also skirting a chance to take an important stand.

The 'People Not Mascots' Logo is meant to be a Native American protest caricature of the Cleveland Indians Baseball team. It was originally painted by David Jakupca at the historic ARK in Berea incorporating elements of the Theory of Iceality on Environmental Arts, it has drawn criticism from some sportswriters, fans and local businessmen, but gained immediate acceptance among humanitarian, religious groups and Native Americans. It gained international popular attention when it was it exhibited by ICEA at the 1993 UN World Conference on Human Rights held in Vienna, Austria and has become one of the most recognized anti-racists logo's in existence. It also caused repercussions for the groups connected with using the logo in protest demonstrations and this has been documented in the INTERNECINE MATRIX..

They have been doing this for a few year.  The only place you really see it is on the left shoulder of the jersey.

Chief Wahoo in this picture isn't even used. That's a very old picture from the stadium that was demolished back in 1993, but I guess that wouldn't help the slant on this article.

The only "controversy" comes from the uptight PC crowd. What next, PETA going after the Bills, Bears or Sehawks?

@Tbone5150 Good catch. We all should have known that by the 'Ladies Day' and the double header. Both are bygone events.

@EricBenghaziPorvaznik I agree with you 100% I think being offended is for soft, thin skinned people. These teams don't pick nicknames to poke fun. You don't see the Cincinnati Clowns out there, it's to pay homage. What's next, real cowboys being offended by the Dallas Cowboys, Dallas Mavericks? LOL Or people of Irish decent being offended by Celtics and Fighting Irish. I think of the toilet flushing when I think of these PC hacks that are offended over everything.

@charliepeligro  ...and since no one is talking about getting rid of anything that mentions Indian, you have no point.

@muser The team is still called the Indians, they're just ditching the racially insensitive caricature/logo. There's also a real difference between Braves/Warriors/Chiefs/Indians and Redskins. If you don't see that, you should at least know that a lot of people see them in a different light.

@EricaSt56843562 Easy for a broad like you to make money, but not many men will pay that kind of money for performing when you are a 70 year old geezer.

It must be easy if some dumb broad that doesn't understand "brothers" should be "brother's" can do it.

@Rickapolis @Tbone5150 And that "WASH" is most likely for the Washington Senators, which means the picture is at least 42 years old.

@JimmyKemp23 @EricBenghaziPorvaznik The difference is that Irish people are no longer discriminated against, because they're just "White."  Thin-skinned is code-speak for colored people who dare to complain that they're subject to discrimination.

@remosu37 @EricBenghaziPorvaznik anyone who has not yet seen that picture (that with the three caps) should click on the link above and view the pic. It shows why the Chief Wahoo logo simply had to go.
