Derrick Rose says he’s the best player in the NBA

Uncategorized

Apparently, Chicago Bulls guard and former MVP Derrick Rose lives in world where LeBron James isn’t the clear-cut best player in the world. In an interview with CNN (h/t to them for the clip), Rose was asked who he thought was the best player in the  league. His response: Derrick Rose.

It was so startling an answer, even the CNN editor couldn’t help but mock Rose, who happens to be coming off an ACL injury that kept him out for the 2012 season — you remember, a season in which LeBron James and Kevin Durant eviscerated the rest of the league.

CNN’s Pedro Pinto even laughed at the answer and asked Rose essentially ‘Are you sure?’ The camera took a closeup of Rose’s face during his response — which was ‘yeah’ — as if to say ‘Look, he’s even saying it with a straight face.’

My response:

Not a chance son. Maybe if you give it a few more years, Lebronm CP3, and Durant get old and a few other guys move on, you may be in the top 10. Until then, stay in your lane, OK?

Based on what I saw in the 2011 ECF, Rose wasn't even actually the league's best player the year he won MVP, much less now, two years later and with James and Durant even better than they were back then.

But I suppose the Bulls don't pay Rose all those millions to be modest.

Yea okay. Lebron and Durant blow Rose away the gap isn't even close. Westbrook is basically Roses level

Derek Rose wasn't the best even in his MVP year... he only won it because he was the flavor of the month and LeBron fatigue had set into the league

Got to prove it year in year out - When you have as many rings as Lebron or Duncan or Kobe or Parker come back and beat your chest. Being the best individual player usually gets awards, but no rings.

He was likable when he was seldom heard from. Familiarity breeds contempt.

Derrick--meet LeBron and Kevin. Oh, and Kobe, too--when he's healthy.

What do you want DRose to say? LeBron/Durant/Kobe is the best in the league? I like he's confidence saying that he's the best in the NBA.

I am biased as I'm a Bulls fan, but I resent this article.  A pro athlete should think he's the best.  You ask any boxer who the best is and he better say himself.  I guess this article makes sense if you don't understand what it is to be a pro athlete.

Being delusional is not a requirement for being the best.

To be honest.  It is a loaded question.   Reminiscent of a few years ago when Eli Manning saying he was on the level of Tom Brady  (people mocked him then but what was he supposed to say.  Also he proved it by winning a superbowl over Brady and having a good year).   If you ask Kobe or Kevin Durant who the best player is, odds are Kobe will say he is without hesitation.   Durant may or may not say himself.    Rose has to have that attitude/mentality of wanting to be the best.   He has some resume to speak of in that he did win an MVP.  I'm not to go fault a guy for thinking he is the best.   If it was someone like Monta Ellis or who hasn't acheived much, it would be a different story.

To be the best PLAYER you have to at least have PLAYED a few games, Derrick;not just sit on the sidelines 100% healthy, eating Cheeetos and watching your needy team lose because you were scared.

This is a biased post because I am a Bulls fan but what good is a superstar if he doesn't believe he is the best. If he doesn't think that then he never will be the best. It's a good mindset to have and I like it.

"Best" in what sense?

@DeMar-DeRozan-AKA-Kid-Dynamite he could have been more humble for a guy coming off a knee injury and with zero big wins under his belt

Hes not the best... there are at least  2 and maybe more players better than him even when hes 100% healthy

@chitownboxing So you think a featherweight who thinks he's the best boxer in the world better say himself?  Who would YOU pick in a bout between this featherweight and the current heavyweight champ?

he cannot honestly think he is the best, come on now

@EasyGoer Hey, you have major knee surgery and then I can scream at you about coming back and playing when I think you are ready. Who are you to question his heart?

AaronDunckel

@dhpaulwooton all he had to do was say  "I believe I can be the best - I recognize that there are other great players, but I  believe I can be right there with anyone when Im 100%"

@dhpaulwooton

"I don't compare myself to other players, that's for the media". "The one thing I can say is that when I'm at 100%, watch out."

Simple answer to a simple question.

Many people feel the same way I do. Another case in point: as much as he may be disliked, Terrell Owens showed a lot of heart coming off major surgery to play in the Super Bowl a few years back. Derrick Rose hasn't shown heart or toughness like that.

@6marK6 @EasyGoer

But that's the difference between being "good", "great" and "the best".  To be "the best" you need to overcome obstacles, not wait for them to be moved or go away.

@AaronLove @6marK6 @EasyGoer So tearing a major ligament in your knee at a young age when you have your whole career ahead of you is just an obstacle?  Pretty sure his employers were ok with what was happening with his rehab and that's all that matters.  He may not be the best in the league but no one has the right to criticize his decison to protect the longevity of his career.
