Taiwanese Women’s Tennis Star Reaches Agreement to Wear Beer Logo During Matches
Earlier this month, Taiwanese tennis player Hsieh Su-wei and her partner, Peng Shuai of China, won the women’s doubles title at Wimbledon. At least for Hsieh, the triumph has opened up new sponsorship opportunities that were largely unavailable before — she’s capitalized on her newfound prominence by reaching a preliminary agreement to endorse Taiwan Beer.

The deal, which will reportedly pay Hsieh NT$5 million (US$167,700) a year, could be signed by the end of the month at the earliest, [parent company] chairman Hsu An-hsuan said yesterday. Under the agreement, Hsieh will wear the Taiwan Beer logo during her matches and shoot commercials pitching the product.
Hsieh’s father had previously threatened that the tennis star may adopt Chinese citizenry if the right endorsement deal were to arise, but this seems like a win-win situation for everyone involved: Hsieh maintains her native nationality while the sponsorship helps her cover the lofty costs of playing professional tennis and Taiwan Beer gets heightened domestic and international exposure — if Hseih’s upward ascent continues, the libation could be poised to challenge Heineken as the beer of choice at the pre-match tailgates of beer-guzzling tennis fans.
