The Lineup: Monday, July 1
Big Breakers, Ninja Warriors, Tour de Francers, and ... SPARQ™
You can’t tear your ACL if you never get up from the couch. (All times Eastern)
Tennis Wimbledon: Round of 16, coverage starts at 6:03a.m. (ESPN2 & ESPN3)
The round of sixteen, known as Manic Monday, is a favorite among spectators. Take it from SI writer Courtney Nguyen’s preview: “With all 16 men’s and women’s fourth round matches set to be played, there’s simply no better day than the second Monday at Wimbledon.” The crazy results of this tournament, with a number of top seeds already out (including, now, Serena Williams, at the hands of Sabine Lisicki, above), has been a breeding ground for great portmanteaus: The bar is set at “Wimbleweirdness”.
Cycling Tour de France: Stage 3, 6:30a.m. (NBC Sports Network)
An historic blooper was narrowly avoided in the weekend stages of the race when a dog wandered onto the track as a huge pack of riders came barreling through. Expect the animal hijinx to escalate until the 28th stage of the race, when a tiger mauls a racer from Team Sky.
MLB San Francisco Giants vs. Cincinnati Reds, 7:00p.m. (ESPN)
The defending champs are in fourth place in their own division as they head to Cin City to face the Reds. The Giants have ridden the decline of their starting pitching down the NL West ladder. Tonight’s starter, rookie Michael Kickham, doesn’t look to be the answer, what with his 10.57 ERA.
TV 2013 ESPY’s Nomination Special, 8:00p.m. (ESPN2)
It must be so exciting for a fella like LeBron James to think about the prospect of finally getting some recognition for this whole basketball thing.
TV Big Break: Mexico, 9:00p.m. (Golf Channel)
Special guest Lorena Ochoa gets a pretty dramatic introduction in this promo, complete with professional wrestler level rock soundtrack. The guy at the end of the clip who declines to listen to her advice is asking for a Stone Cold Stunner.
TV American Ninja Warrior, 8:00p.m. (NBC)
Once solely available in crudely-translated late night basic cable form, this obstacle course competition offers a serious display of athleticism. It’s like Wipeout with the zaniness turned down and the number of former gymnasts greatly increased. There’s a hole in the sports viewing market for a modern American Gladiators. Ninja Warrior, just might fill it.
High School Football The Opening: Sparq Championship 7:00p.m. (ESPNU)
So Nike makes a clothing line for cross training, then invents a statistic to promote that clothing line, then creates a competition to promote that statistic, the creates a television program to promote that competition. There’s a lot going on here, but it basically boils down to high school kids running the 40 and something called the YIRT.
