Andrew Wiggins Decides on Kansas; Opposing Fans Decide He Should Blow His ACL

Twitter

With no TV cameras, no hats and only one local reporter present at the Huntington Prep gym, Andrew Wiggins‘s understated approach to announcing his choice of college was an unusual but refreshing departure from what might have been expected of the best high school basketball prospect since LeBron James. Not understated? The reaction of Twitter trolls, who lashed out after Wiggins picked Kansas over Kentucky, Florida State and North Carolina.

Several of those fans, most of whom tweeted encouragement and good luck to Wiggins before his decision, responded with vitriol after he selected the Jayhawks at 12:12 PM ET. Many of them are college students themselves. There’s a handful of NSFW language in here, and no shortage of offensive, odious gestures toward a high school senior. Also, guys, it’s “tear.”

What a sad, sad society we live in. :(  Too much emphasis on sports and not enough on helping each other.

People suck. No wonder he didn't choose those schools.

The great irony is that most of these 'fans' have most likely never actually been associated with the University they root for, nor would they understand the concept of higher education if it hit them like a baseball bat to the ribs. It's unfortunate that the rest of the fan base has to be dragged through the mud because of a couple of knuckleheads.

What else do you expect from the Rednecks in Kintucky, North Carolina, and Florida?

Yes, these are all tasteless, ignorant comments but don't judge a fan base off one person. I know one of these people above and I know he wouldn't truly wish harm on anyone and he made an immature comment to get a rise out of his buddies. He is still in high school and knows he has some growing up to still do, so know who your judging before you also make ignorant comments about people. Also make sure these "yahoos/ losers" didn't already apologize for their comments and admit to making a mistake. Don't act like you've never said anything you regret!

To the Twitterers -- grow up and get a freakin' life.

I know what I hope for.  I hope someone writes an article that isn't just a bunch of cut-and-paste twitter posts.

As someone originally from England what makes me laugh at this (amongst other aspects of college sport) is that most of these fans have no connection whatsoever to the universities in question. They just happen to live in the boonies in these states usually with no pro team sport. So they latch on to this low level amateur stuff and yet treat it like it really matters. Sad really.

Well, judging from the comments above, there is certainly no shortage of low class people.  What complete losers.  Wiggins chose Kansas, and the decision was his alone.  For strangers to be irate because he did not choose their favorite school (which NO DOUBT) they clearly did not attend, is pitiful.  Andrew Wiggins, I hope you enjoy your time at Kansas, and best of luck to you.  To the losers who made such ugly remarks, you are who you are; truly pitiful low life "people".

But look at the "schools" these yahoos are from...only Chapel Hill should be ashamed of itself.  But Florida State, Kentucky?  Exactly.

Here's hoping the kid gets an education, and maybe even gets to see all three of these basketball teams lined up across from him along the way.

It delights me that these human garbage random nobodies have now had themselves and their hideous behavior published on a major website.  Now they can enjoy a flood of response tweets from people 'observing' their brainless sociopathy.

These people are all losers hating on a winner who is still in high school.  SAD.

When I seen the headline, I assumed they would all be KY fans.  Dodged that one, but I'm sure it wouldn't be hard to find some nasty tweets from the bluegrass.

couldn't ya just wish that he has a really terrible year?  Why does he have to get injured and why his knee specifically? LOL sports fans... I hate KU with a fiery passion, but i wouldn't ever wish injury upon someone much less an 18 year old kid

Who cares what some sociopaths d bag on twitter thinks?  I'm sure you would have found some Kansas fan that would have said the same garbage if he went elsewhere.  Crazy is everywhere and it isn't going away any time soon.

Stay classy, sports fans. Gotta love that "tare" usage, too.

@OK Why does every 'genius' think Florida's part of the True South?

@StevenKoch Everyone has said something they regret. Not everyone does it extremely publicly with hash tags to ensure that even more random people see it. If your friend doesn't realize that Twitter is forever and that there's a difference between cracking a joke in the living room and saying something awful on Twitter, he probably has more growing up to do than you're willing to admit.

@leehwgoc That was the goal. Based on the number of since-deleted tweets, I'd say it's working.

@BlackSession1 LOL. And one of the "tare" kids listed himself as a "sophmore"...likely in perpetuity

@lazaro he is my little brother so I know damn well how much growing up he has to do. I also know that he knows how stupid it was but like I said before know the person before making extreme character judgements

@j7appleWhy do you folks believe that one has to stick around a college campus for 4 or 5 years to get an education?   The debt factories/universities are running a huge con, providing a terrible product at a ridiculous cost, while convincing naive kids to stick around forever lest the big, bad world chew them up.

@StevenKoch @benaissanceart His words weren't "taken the wrong way." How many ways are there to take "I hope you tear your ACL" or "die"? Quit making excuses. Words have consequences - high time you and he learned that.

StevenKoch
StevenKoch

@benaissanceart That comment proves you have more growing up to do than he does. His two words were taken the wrong way as I mentioned before and he apologized. You on the other hand are a low life that actually means the nasty things you say about people. Grow up you immature little infant

@lazaro He also followed with an apology that said "I wish Andrew Wiggins all of the success that I'm sure he will receive. He is a great player and I meant nothing by what I said" but of course, this is a one sided article.
