Did The Cameron Crazies Go Too Far?

Fans accused of taunting opponent over grandmom's death

It hasn’t been a banner week for Duke on the public-relations front.

First the sordid details of a fraternity’s “racist rager” went viral. Not a good look.

Now it’s been alleged that Duke’s Cameron Crazies taunted N.C. State’s Tyler Lewis about his grandmother’s recent passing during last night’s game in Durham.

The chant in question came when Lewis, whose grandmother died on Friday, stepped to the free-throw line with 13:47 remaining in second half. Whether the student section was cheering “How’s your grandma” or “Past your bedtime” is the crux of the debate, but you can judge for yourself here:

The rumor gained steam when former Wolfpack star Julius Hodge tweeted about it last night.

That was followed by a dispatch from USA Today‘s Alex Kennedy.

Several N.C. State students have corroborated the report — here and here — while a student reporter for the Raleigh school has attributed the taunt to a “handful of dumb college kids” as opposed to the entire student section.

There’s even a petition in circulation to classify the Crazies as a terrorist organization.

What do you think? Do the Crazies warrant condemnation for the chant or is it a misunderstanding?

It started with "Past Your Bedtime" on the first shot because the kid looks like he's 12. I definitely heard some vocal people who brought Grandma into shot 2.

It's 'Past your bedtime.' And good onya Crazies. That's pretty funny.

Hard to "judge."  If you can clearly make it out you've got ears like an elephant.  Sounded more like the second of the two choices EMS gave us: "past your bedtime."

Like they say"you can have book sense or common sense" & the crazies have no sense. They get away with anything because of coach k, who never condemns anything they say or do.

I'm a cameron crazy and was at the game.  we chanted past your bedtime.  a very common chant we give to small players that we've done many times regularly.  dont get all worked up!

If you told me to watch this clip and then tell you what the students were chanting I would have had no idea.  It seems to me indecipherable. But since they are obviously saying something I'll give them the benefit of the doubt.

Unbelievable!  Spectators, spectators spectators at Duke have no class. The administration should be ashamed.

As someone who has sat in the student section, there are typically "score sheets" that list the cheers for that day's game.  If something like this was on the sheet, then the leadership of the Cameron Crazies (yes, there is a student group in charge of this) should be punished.  However, if there was no official cheer of this nature planned, then individuals should be held accountable and the Crazies should be left alone.

Truly sad if true.  But I am getting tired of having the front page of my go-to sports web site littered with stuff like this (Te'o affair also).  I don't think the users are clamoring for this info; rather writers think we want it.  ridiculous.

Well, audio don't lie.  And, no one that listens to this can claim with a straight face that this was perpetrated by only a few people.  I suspect this is an effort for the "Crazies" to regain relevance and attention after articles like this one: http://www.cbssports.com/collegebasketball/story/17018067/fabled-cameron-crazies-succumbing-to-cameron-monotony-at-duke chronicling the fall-off in student interest in the team and fan creativity at the games.  This wouldn't be the first time the Crazies have crossed the line (taunting players for plagiarism and rape accusations).  I, for one, however have never seen solid evidence of the charge that they taunted a child amputee at a game against Maryland: http://www.thebrushback.com/leglessorphan_full.htm

They can very clearly be heard chanting, "Past your bedtime," a jab at the baby-faced Lewis.  Don't try to make a story where there is not one.

First, if this is true then I agree this is completely classless and way over the line. However, I've been listening to the local radio all morning and reading the message boards, reporters/people who were actually at the game said the chant was actually "past your bedtime", but people will hear what they want to from the video. The original guy reporting this wasnt even at the game. Also, if this actually was chanted, Coach K would have stopped the game, grabbed a microphone and told them to shut up, which hes done on numerous occassions. It was probably one or two drunk idiots behind the state bench mouthing off and it got blown up. Either way, its wrong, but I highly doubt the crazies would stoop that low. Its just a shame that this is what is getting talked about, and not the great effort & heart that Lewis showed with his play.

If the student section had chanted "How's your grandma?", Coach K himself would have put a stop to that!

@jpark_ Right...that makes you biased and your comment should not be seen as valid since it lacks independence.

@Turbo Turbo- if it wasn't patently obvious from even a cursory reading the article from "The Brushback," it's satire.   In fact, if you go to its home page, it says, "The Brushback is a satire site. All names are made up, except in cases when public figures are being satirized. All quotes are fictional and any similarity to actual quotes is coincidental."   But even a minimal amount of effort is too much to prevent you from spreading vile and thoroughly baseless accusations against Duke.

The so-called "grandma" chant is another falsehood.   First, do you really think the student body would know details about NC State's backup PG?   Second, the audio makes it clear that they're chanting "Past your bedtime" -- which they've done before for other players-- at the baby-faced Lewis-- and there also are photos of fans with signs to that effect.   It is impossible to hear any reference to his grandma without having a preconceived notion that the fans were chanting that.  Third, numerous objective observers (such as Laura Keeley of the Raleigh News & Observer, who verified her observations with five other reporters at the game) confirmed that nothing of the kind was chanted.   Finally, one of the people who first spread this bogus story, "Joseph Henry," who purported to be a Duke grad student in attendance, has been debunked as a fraud-- there is no reference to him in the student directory.

@Smell My Junk @jpark_ would definitely be biased if I was commenting on a matter of opinion, like who's the best bball player in college (mason plumlee).  but this is not an opinion but a matter of fact, just like the question,"what is the color of cameron indoor's ceiling."  Since I've been to cameron countless times, I have special authority over you and anyone else who hasn't frequented cameron as far as what the color of the ceiling is.  Likewise, since I was there, I have special authority over what was chanted and how that chant "past your bedtime" is a frequent chant given to really small bball oponents.

@Michigan @Turbo Please read my post (or are you a Duke athlete in remedial reading class?)  I wrote, "I, for one, however have never seen solid evidence of the charge that they taunted a child amputee at a game against Maryland: link."  That is the worst allegation I've ever heard about the Crazies, but, unlike the audio evidence that the fans at the NC State game were chanting, "How's your Grandma", to date I'm unaware of evidence that would substantiate the amputee charge.  So, to my knowledge, the Tyler Lewis chant is the most offensive yet.

If you think they wouldn't, you are obviously unfamiliar with the Duke student's history of in-depth research for heckle topics.

@Michigan @Turbo I am not suggesting that "most of the crowd" was chanting "How's your grandma" but merely rebutting previous assertions on this thread that it was only a couple of drunk idiots.  I think you'd have to admit from the audio evidence that many people were involved in the chant even if your allegiance to Duke (why?) keeps you from admitting what they were chanting.

Michigan
Michigan

@Turbo @Michigan I read your post, and you have now twice referred to a satirical -- and thus completely invented -- story.   It's intellectually dishonest to refer to it and then say that "I'm unaware of evidence that would substantiate it"-- after already being told it's completely made-up.  You're still suggesting it may be true.  It's no different from me saying that I'm not aware of any evidence that Turbo beats his wife or enjoys the romantic company of livestock.   If it's patently untrue, don't give it any credibility.

And that's not even getting into the complete lack of "audio evidence" regarding Tyler Lewis.   Only someone with an axe to grind against Duke (as you obviously do) could suggest that most the crowd was chanting about his grandma.   Add to that the statements of the Raleigh News & Observer reporter, who verified that neither she nor five other reporters at the game heard anything of the sort, and the photo posted above that shows fans with a dry erase board that referred directly to Tyler Lewis's bedtime.

@Michigan I do think that some fans did utter the chant. I don't think it was all or a majority of them but some did. The kid's father said as much.

The google search proves absolutely nothing-- only that people are spreading an untrue story (and many of the headlines are themselves skeptical).   Simply repeating a made-up hoax doesn't mean it actually happened-- just look at all the articles about Manti Te'o mourning his girlfriend

@ThePDFGhost @Jimbo2 Had you not read the article and did not have the grandma stuff in your mind while watching and listening to the video, the odds that you would have "heard" anything that resembled the phrase in question would be infinitesimal.  Psych 101, fella.
